"Since
1977 the Democrats have been in the forefront of championing transgender,
lesbian and gay rights. And our commitment to you all is this will
continue, despite the conservative uprising in the community and in our
parliament. Because equal rights are human rights and when we win, you
win."
"There has been a great deal of progress towards equality and acceptance for the GLBTI community over the last thirty years since the Democrats entered the political fray. There is, however, still a long way to go before we achieve full and fair equality. It's very clear that the majority of Australians support non-discrimination on the grounds of sexuality." In Western Australia, the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 makes it unlawful to harass a person because of their sexual orientation or gender history. This year, a review of the Act also recommends making vilification based on a person’s sexual orientation unlawful. These are positive developments, but we need to continue supporting and lobbying for recognition of all gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex rights in Western Australia.
